What's new at the Hertie School
December | 2023

Dear friends of the Centre for Digital Governance,

Thank you for your contributions to our community on digital governance, joining in on our events and colloquia as well as sharing your own research and policy insights. We will take a break over the holidays and return with updates again as usual in February 2024. Until then, happy holidays from festive and snowy (hopefully) Berlin.

Please find our most recent news and updates below.

Our Digital Governance Research Colloquium will return in February 2024. You will find an overview of our events here.

Prof. Daniela Stockmann took the reins as the Centre Director earlier this year. Find out the motivation behind her research, what she thinks about the challenges of social media governance, and her plans for the centre in this interview. Watch the full video on YouTube.

The Centre hosted two distinguished guests: Thelma Quaye, Chief of Infrastructure Programme at the Smart Africa secretariat and Anna Sophie Herken, Member of the board of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, at the Hertie School for an interactive panel on policymaking and regulation for Africa's digital transformation. Rewatch the recording of this insightful session moderated by Leslie Nii Lantey Mills, MPP 2024, on YouTube.

Valeriya Ionan, Deputy Minister for Eurointegration at the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine, visited the Hertie School to give a terrific lecture about the Ukrainian experience with Diia and the policy solutions the government is implementing to address various hurdles it faces to reach their ambitious goal of delivering the state in a smartphone. Here are photos from the event if you missed it.

In the fall, our students joined counterparts from the Oxford Internet Institute for a three-day study trip in Tallinn, Estonia to discover the country's digital society and public sector digitalisation. Check out this video to listen to our students share their main insights and learnings from the trip.

Our Centre is offering two three-year scholarships for exceptional candidates seeking to pursue full-time PhDs in the field of digital governance. The studentships at the Hertie School will start from August 2024 onwards. Find out more here. We will accept applications until 31 January 2024.

We've documented our recent research events. If you happened to miss them or would like to review the informative presentations, you can now find them on YouTube.

Thank you for the continued support of the Centre. Feel free to email us at any time, follow us on LinkedIn, or visit our website to see our latest work.

Please also join our community group on Linkedin, your one-stop shop to share and discover job and research opportunities related to the digital governance and tech policy sectors while connecting directly with our growing community.

All the best,

Your Centre for Digital Governance team
